Faith & Flourishing: Psychological Pathways to Strengthening Īmān

An in-depth session exploring how faith and psychology intersect to strengthen īmān, resilience, and holistic well-being.

TRANSFORMATIONAL Al-Iman Amānah
TRANSFORMATIONAL Inspire

In an age where questions of mental well-being and faith are increasingly interconnected, understanding how īmān shapes psychological health has become essential.

Faith & Flourishing: Psychological Pathways to Strengthening Īmān, part of the Al-Iman Amānah initiative, brings together research, clinical insight, and Islamic tradition to explore how faith can support both inner stability and personal growth.

This session moves beyond simplistic notions of mental health, offering a clear distinction between flourishing (purpose, well-being, life satisfaction) and psychological distress (anxiety, depression)—and examining how different dimensions of faith influence both.

Led by Dr. Osman Umarji and Dr. Fahad Habib Khan, the session integrates academic research with practical application, helping participants understand how concepts such as tawakkul, qadar, and uncertainty relate to emotional resilience and spiritual strength.

Participants will also explore how one’s internal perception of Allah (often referred to as “God image”) shapes both faith and psychological experience, and how misalignment between belief and lived experience can lead to inner struggle.

Key Themes
  • Distinguishing flourishing vs psychological distress
  • The role of holistic religiosity in well-being
  • Navigating uncertainty through faith (tawakkul & qadar)
  • Understanding religious doubt and “God image”
  • Faith as a source of resilience and psychological strength
  • When and how to seek professional support
Session Structure
  • Research-based presentation
  • Clinical application and real-life frameworks
  • Guided reflection
  • Q&A discussion
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • A clear model distinguishing thriving vs illness and why this matters for Muslim wellbeing.
  • A research-based understanding of holistic religiosity and the pattern: religiosity → thriving; intolerance of uncertainty → distress.
  • A psychologically and spiritually coherent bridge: uncertainty tolerance is both a psychological skill and a spiritual challenge (how we relate to control, qadar, and tawakkul).
  • A usable framework for understanding Divine Experiential Internalization (how Allah is perceived/experienced) and why dissonance between beliefs and felt-experience can fuel spiritual/psychological struggle.
  • Practical, non-stigmatizing guidance on when to see a therapist or seek help.
