Safe Harbour: Divine Protection in a Restless World

An interactive reflection on Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas, exploring divine protection, inner security, and seeking refuge in Allah.

TRANSFORMATIONAL الإيمان أمانة
TRANSFORMATIONAL الإلهام

In moments of uncertainty, fear, and emotional unrest, the Qur’an teaches us where true safety is found.

Safe Harbour: Divine Protection in a Restless World was a reflective session with Ustadh Hisham Abu Yusuf, exploring the meanings of Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas — the Muʿawwidhatayn — and their relevance to the fears and anxieties of modern life.

The session began by reflecting on recent events in the region and how moments of crisis expose the human need for refuge, stability, and reassurance. Ustadh Hisham explained that seeking refuge in Allah is not only about avoiding harm, but about realizing that in our most vulnerable moments, we are not alone.

Through linguistic reflection, Qur’anic examples, and interactive discussion, the lecture unpacked the meaning of istiʿādhah as clinging to Allah for protection, much like something fragile clings to something firm for safety.

The session explored how people often seek comfort through distraction, indulgence, or self-soothing, while the Qur’an redirects the believer toward Allah as the true source of security and peace.

A major focus of the lecture was the placement of the Muʿawwidhatayn at the end of the Qur’an. Ustadh Hisham highlighted how these final surahs remind believers to constantly return to Allah for protection, and how the end of the Qur’an leads naturally back to its beginning, making our relationship with the Qur’an a continuous journey.

The lecture also examined the structure of Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas, showing how they address layers of visible and invisible harm, from external dangers to envy, whispers, and the inner struggles that unsettle the heart.

The program concluded with a reminder that these two short surahs were a core part of the Prophet’s ﷺ daily practice, and that their power lies not only in recitation, but in understanding and internalizing their meanings.
