New Atheism and the Future of Faith: Doubt, Reason, and the Trust of Belief

A thought-provoking lecture exploring doubt, reason, and faith in the age of New Atheism through an Islamic intellectual and spiritual lens.

TRANSFORMATIONAL الإيمان أمانة
TRANSFORMATIONAL الإلهام

As part of the Al-Imān Amānah initiative, Minaretein Center hosted New Atheism and the Future of Faith: Doubt, Reason, and the Trust of Belief, a reflective and intellectually engaging lecture examining the contemporary challenges facing faith in an age of skepticism, hyper-connectivity, and ideological uncertainty.

Delivered by Dr. Usaama Al-Azami, Assistant Professor at the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, the session explored the rise of modern atheistic discourse and its broader cultural impact, particularly on Muslim communities navigating questions of identity, meaning, and belief.

The lecture addressed how movements associated with “New Atheism” emerged in the early 2000s, often framing religion as irrational or incompatible with science, while simultaneously contributing to wider cultural trends of alienation, individualism, and spiritual emptiness.

A major theme throughout the session was that doubt itself is not foreign to the Islamic tradition. Drawing from Qur’anic examples such as the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), Dr. Al-Azami explained that questioning, reflection, and the pursuit of certainty are part of the believer’s spiritual journey rather than signs of failure.

The lecture also explored the relationship between reason, revelation, and scientific inquiry, challenging the assumption that faith and science are inherently opposed. Through historical and philosophical reflection, participants were invited to critically examine modern assumptions surrounding knowledge, rationality, and truth.

Additional discussion points included:

  • contemporary challenges related to social media and digital culture,
  • questions surrounding suffering and the problem of evil,
  • the preservation of faith in times of uncertainty,
  • historical critiques of Islam and Hadith,
  • misconceptions regarding women in Islam,
  • and the importance of open, intellectually honest spaces where difficult questions can be addressed without fear or shame.

The session emphasized that faith is not merely inherited, but must be nurtured through reflection, sincerity, knowledge, and meaningful engagement with revelation. Participants were encouraged to view īmān as an amānah — a trust that must be protected, strengthened, and continually renewed.

The lecture concluded with an extended interactive discussion and Q&A session, where attendees raised questions related to science, history, gender, social pressures, and contemporary intellectual challenges facing Muslim communities today.
